Winograd Challenges AIPAC, Harman in CA Primaries
Progressive Marcy Winograd challenges Congresswoman Jane Harman in the Southern California primaries of District 36. New Policy PAC endorses Winograd for her outspoken positions on ending the blockade on Gaza, freezing Jewish settlements, establishing a just resolution whether a one state or two state solution and pushing for negotiations on Iran instead of sanctions and war.

The Congressional Quarterly reported in 2009 that a 2005 National Security Agency wiretap caught Congresswoman Jane Harman assuring an Israeli agent that “she would lobby the Justice Department to reduce espionage-related charges against two former officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)”. In return Jane Harman wanted AIPAC to lobby for her to become chairwoman of the House Intelligence Committee.
Although there was enough evidence to investigate Harman, Attorney General Gonzales dropped the charges to get her support in defending the administration’s warrantless wiretap program.
Jane Harman received a warm welcome and a thunderous standing ovation at the AIPAC Conference of 2009 when she said the wiretapping scandal had “a chilling affect on the bipartisan US-Israeli relationship.”
Now Jane Harman faces a strong challenger in California by the name of Marcy Winograd. Marcy Winograd who obtained a respectable 38% in her run against Harman in the 2006 Congressional elections is running again on a progressive platform including ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
While Jane Harman toes the AIPAC line on Israel, supporting the Gaza siege and objecting to a freeze on Jewish settlements, Marcy Winograd is outspoken about the need for an immediate freeze on Jewish settlements and a swift end to the Gaza siege imposed by Israel. Furthermore Marcy Winograd, who like Harman is Jewish, strongly advocates an end to the occupation, whether through the establishment of a Palestinian state or binational state for both Israelis and Palestinians. Winograd has also been outspoken in her opposition to a war on Iran and instead supporting the creation of more jobs in the United States.
Winograd is critical of Harman’s anti-Iran rhetoric, “My opponent’s reference to a military strike is both reckless and reminiscent of the run-up to the US invasion of Iraq, when she failed to provide any oversight in her role on the House Intelligence Committee. At the time, we heard that Iraq was about to attack us with weapons of mass destruction. Now, Harman is parroting the same scare-mongering that led us to a trillion dollar war in Iraq.”
New Policy PAC supports Marcy Winograd’s bid for the Democratic nomination in District 36 of California against Jane Harman. Given that the district straddles the beaches of Los Angeles, the winner of the Democratic nomination is almost certainly assured an easy sail to the finish line in November.
